Choosing between steel, fiberglass and stock pots

Steel and aluminium are for planters that need to hold a shape at scale — long runs of trough planters dividing a restaurant terrace, tall cylinders flanking an entrance, anything with a crisp architectural edge. They can be powder-coated to any colour, including a match to joinery or branding.

Fiberglass is the answer whenever weight matters. A large concrete or steel planter full of substrate can be genuinely difficult to move or to put on a roof; fiberglass gives the same visual mass at a fraction of the weight, which is why it is the usual choice for rooftops, balconies and anywhere the planter will sit on a finished floor.

Ready-made pots are often the sensible answer for smaller pieces. Our shop carries ceramic, PVC, fiber and handwoven pots in sizes suited to everything from a desk plant to a 100 cm ficus. If a stock pot fits, it will cost less and arrive sooner than something made to order.

Custom work is worth it when the space has an awkward dimension, when you need several pieces to match exactly, or when the finish has to tie into something specific.

Matched to the tree, not just the room

Most planters we build are made for a particular piece — an olive tree with a 180 cm spread needs a base wide enough to look stable under it, and a slim ficus looks wrong in something squat. If the planter is for a tree we are also making, we size the two together. Tell us the piece and the spot and we will propose both.
